Gestalt Language Processing

My approach to gestalt language processing and the NLA framework

I often work with children who follow a gestalt language processing pathway, using the Natural Language Acquisition (NLA) framework to support their communication. But every child is unique, and I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach.

I use a range of methods and always take time to understand what’s working and what’s not. I regularly check in with parents and adapt the approach if needed. My aim is to be responsive, not rigid. What matters most is finding what helps your child connect, communicate, and grow.

I’m aware that discussions about gestalt language processing and the NLA framework can sometimes become quite polarised. I believe open, respectful conversations are key to helping families feel informed and supported. I’m always happy to talk through how I work and why, and to adapt the approach if something else might be a better fit.

I follow an evidence-based approach, which means I draw on up-to-date research, my clinical experience, and most importantly, the insights and priorities of the families I work with. It’s not about following a set formula. It’s about thoughtful, flexible support that puts each child’s well-being at the centre of every decision, with a strong commitment to the principle of first, do no harm.

I also deliver training on gestalt language processing and the NLA framework, and I apply the same principles to that work as I do in therapy. My aim is to offer clear, respectful, and practical guidance, grounded in evidence and shaped by real-world experience. Whether I’m working with families or professionals, I prioritise meaningful, collaborative learning that reflects the complexities of real children and the people who support them.
